disintegration stage

In this stage, you will begin to participate in anti-racist work. You may feel guilt or shame for being white, and this is normal. Working through that guilt is a crucial part of understanding your identity and becoming anti-racist.

To Do:

Take the Implicit Bias Test by Harvard to better understand what implicit biases you hold.

To Read:

  • White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo
  • Chapter 6, "The Development of White Identity" in Why are all the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? by Beverly Daniel Tatum
  • What to Do Next:

Do not let guilt (white guilt) or shame stop you from doing anti-racist work. Find a way to do the work of anti-racism. Some examples might include attending a training, joining an allies group, participating in a protest. Keep working to grow, instead of settling into shame, and ask folks how you can grow.
